Maleficent Nails

Maleficent is being released on May 30, 2014.  This movie has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year.  Once the film comes out we will see how "Evil has a beginning."  Maleficent was not always the Mistress of All Evil, she started out as a fairy.  This movie will show the transformation.  The synopsis from IMDB, "The untold story of the villain from 'Sleeping Beauty' reveals the events that hardened Maleficent's heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora, only to later realize that the child may hold the key to peace in the land."

We had a lot of fun coming up with Maleficent inspired nails.  For these ones we used a dark purple and then made a point with a triangle made of glitter.  Then we put the gold accent around it to define the lines.  It is a pointed, glittery and elegant.

For this nail we decided to use glittery black and green.  We put green on the tips of the black nails and on the thumb we created a shield.  It is part black, gold and green with purple rhinestones going down the thumb.

We used shellac polish on these nails.  Shellac polish is great because it lasts longer and leaves your nails looking great. Our master esthetician says that you need to take care of your nails to prevent them from breaking and chipping.  A shellac manicure not only gives you long-lasting polish, it can also help weak, brittle nails grow longer without cracking. Shellac nails cost $15 and shellac polish with a manicure is only $20.  To make an appointment today call 801-422-1030 or visit: http://studio1030.byu.edu/appointments.html

Nail Art

By: Amberly Asay

All of your nails are exposed right now because it is summer and because you’re wearing open toed shoes, going out without gloves, or not wearing any shoes at all!  We do offer one tip though.  If you are only doing plain nail colors, a big trend right now is learning how to properly wear your brights and neutrals.  If you are doing bright finger nails, you should have a neutral color for your toe nails.  If you have bright toe nails, you should have a neutral color on your fingernails.

Studio 1030 is doing all sorts of nail art.  And what better time is there to showcase your nails than during the summer?  Studio 1030 does normal nail polish and shellac nail polish.  Below are some photos of the fun designs Studio 1030 can do, and they are done with shellac nail polish (which lasts longer).

Matte Nail Polish

By: Amberly Asay

The latest and most exciting trend in the nail polish fashion world is the new matte nail polish.  Unlike your typical manicure finish, the matte finish means a polish that is completely devoid of shine.

You can buy color mattes, but I think the more cost-friendly option is to buy a matte top coat. It makes more sense to buy one bottle of top coat to use with every shade of nail polish, then to buy multiple colors.

Applying a Matte Top Coat:
The application of a matte top coat is a little different than a normal top coat.  While a shiny top coat can camouflage most application mistakes, a matte top coat does the opposite, it will magnify mistakes.    Put it on and then let it dry.

One of my favorite things to do, is to do a glitter polish and with a matte coat over it.  This is an especially good look during the holidays.

Base Coat

Sarah Weirich, a stylist at Studio 1030, shares some of her manicure and nail tips.  Sarah says you should use a base coat so the nail polish doesn't stain your finger nails yellow.  The base coat will also help maintain the colored nail polish you put on.
