5 Hair Tips

1. To keep your hair color vibrant longer, use shampoos and conditioners that are formulated for colored hair.

2. Carrots are good for your hair!  Carrots are full of Vitamin A. This keeps your hair shiny, well conditioned and resilient.  So eat up.

3. Get a trim every 6-8 weeks to ensure that you have no damaged ends and to make your hair look healthy.

4. Brush your hair from roots to end nightly. It distributes natural oils throughout the shaft and gives hair a healthy sheen.

5.  Satin pillow cases help control frizz.  The fabric helps lock in moisture.  Cotton causes hair to dry out so the friction of tossing and turning during  the night creates tangles and split ends.

Maleficent Make-Up

Maleficent was released on May 30, 2014.  This movie has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year.  The film teaches us how "Evil has a beginning."  Maleficent was not always the Mistress of All Evil, she started out as a fairy.  This movie will show the transformation.  The synopsis from IMDB, "The untold story of the villain from 'Sleeping Beauty' reveals the events that hardened Maleficent's heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora, only to later realize that the child may hold the key to peace in the land."

BEFORE

AFTER

Doing some research on the film we wanted to do two different eyes.  The fairy Maleficent and Maleficent as the Mistress of All Evil.  The fairy Maleficent is a very natural look, she has long hair, and wears brown dresses.  We used a lot of bronze, browns and gold for the eye shadow. We used a light brown eye brown pencil to slightly thicken the brown.  We did a light liner on the bottom of the eye and worked to create extra long lashes.

For the "Mistress of All Evil" we had a lot of fun and we were really excited to do this eye.  The original Maleficent in the cartoon version of Sleeping Beauty (1959) uses a lot of black and purples.  We decided to use many different shades of purple, gold and blacks to create this fantastic look.

We used black brow pencil to darken the brow and give it a harsher look.  It is more defined and really shows a contrast from the purples.

The make-up line we carry, gloProfessional is used by Reese Witherspoon, Heidi Klum and many other professionals. All gloProfessional products are made up of pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, natural high-pigment minerals, nourishing vitamins and powerful antioxidants which give your skin a healthy, beautiful glowCome in today and get your base matched for free!

Getting the eyeliner right was another challenge.  Doing a long cat-eye with an inside point as well is difficult but it makes your eyes look fantastic.  We used gloProfessional eyeliner pencil to make the lines. It is easy to draw with and makes everything still look defined and gorgeous.

6 Ways to Be Smart About Sun Protection

1. ALWAYS BE PREPARED
A lot of the time people go to the beach and slather on their sunscreen and go about a day without reapplying.  Sunscreen loses its effectiveness with or without a dip in the ocean. A good thumb rule is to apply a nickel-size amount to your face and two tablespoons to your body.  Sunscreen should be reapplied at least every two hours.

2. TAKE YOUR VITAMINS
A sunburn is an inflammatory process, UV light inflames the skin and the overexposure leads to sun=aging, wrinkled, thinned blotchy skin.  Your vitamins will help lessen reddening and stop the inflaming.

3. BE READY RAIN OR SHINE
Wear your sunscreen on cloudy days.  The UV rays can push their way through clouds actually come out even stronger.  Even if you are sitting next to a window, the rays can keep com in gin and get your.

4. DRESS TO BURN LESS
Wear light colors.  Dark or bright colors attract and hold heat from the sun.  Thinner materials may feel great on hot days, but the bigger the weave on the fabric the better the sun rays can get through.  Wear hats, long sleeve lightweight shirts and loose-fitting pants.

5. MIND YOUR LIPS
Lips are really easy to burn, because they don't have melanin, which helps protect your skin from UV rays.  Ue a lip moisturizer with an SPF of 20 or higher.  This will give you summer soft lips.

6. SHADES THAT PROTECT
Stylish sunglasses my look good now, but they don't protect your eyes from the sun.  Not wearing proper sunglasses coverage can burn your eyeballs and cause wrinkles around your eyes and hurt your vision.

5 Ways you are making your skin look dull.

1. You are drinking the wrong liquids.
If you are dehydrated your skin will show it.  You should drink at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day (especially when living in a desert). Coffee and alcohol are particularly draining, but you shouldn't have a problem with that if you're at BYU.

2. You are spending too much time in the sun.
You should be wearing sunscreen.  Spending too much time in the sun means you can dry out your skin, leaving it dull and dead.

3. You are using makeup remover wipes and not washing your face.
Makeup removers remove makeup.  The alcohol in the wipes dries out your skin.  When you take your makeup off, it is important that you wash your face with a cleanser and then a moisturizer before you go to bed.

4. You are staying up late and waking up early.
We skip sleep because we don't think we really need it.  One late night and you will make it through day one, but when it comes to habit you have issues.  Your body needs time to rejuvenate and rebuild itself.  If you aren't sleeping, your body can't function because you are using its energy to simply stay awake.  Try to go to sleep at the same time each night and morning, so your body can rest, making your skin brighter!

5. Your diet is high in carbs and low in vegetables.
When you are super busy your diet can easily become your last priority.  We grab things like refined carbs, because they satisfy hunger and are easy to eat on the go, but when we do this instead of eating fruits and vegetables it takes a toll on our skin.  The sugars our body processes in carbs go directly to our skin, making the tone of our skin uneven and giving it a dull appearance.

Sleeping Beauty Make-Up

Maleficent is being released on May 30, 2014.  This movie has been one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Maleficent is the untold story of the villain from 'Sleeping Beauty'.  We decided to do our own take on Sleeping Beauty since she will be in this movie as well.  We based most of our colors from the 1959 Disney Version of Sleeping Beauty.

We were trying to decide if we should do pink or blue eyeshadow. Through our research we found that the running gag in the movie, where two of the fairies argue about what color Princess Aurora's dress should be (pink or blue), comes from the filmmaker's problem as to what color Aurora's dress should be (pink or blue). We decided on pink (obviously).

We used gloProfessional eyeshadow and wanted to play with soft and bright pinks.  We started lighter on the inside and got darker as we went out.  We did a thick eyeliner on the top of her lid, to give her that more open and awake look.

Mesh
During Spring put your mesh over black or a daring neon hue camisole.

Chiffon
Wear this floaty bridesmaid's staple under tunics or sweaters to add lightness and movement.

Dressy Pants
Whether you like it or not, many runways this Spring featured dresses that were layered over trousers.  This trend is also increasing on the red carpets.

Earthy Tones
Earthy tones are in this season, and this includes: nude, moss green, khaki and neutrals.  Earthy tones are great because they can be used as a "palate cleanser among all of the bold and bright summer trends.

Fringe
Fringe has become the embellishment of choice this season.  Although it is far away from its grungy hippie roots.

Iridescence/Candy Wrapper Colors
Whether in the form of shiny chain mail, liquid-gold lame or toughened-up sequins, the precious-metalic fabrics are here. For a major statement wear a holographic dress or skirt.  For a more subtle effect grip an iridescent clutch.

Tea-Length Skirts
The tea-length skirt (between the midi and maxi) is it for spring.  The ladylike hemline can be just as modern as anything else.

Ruffles
Ruffles were another big embellishment but less girly and more sculptural.

Big (Girl) Pants
Whether it's billowy culottes, bermuda shorts and wide-leg trousers it's all about the way the fabric flows around the leg this season.

Pleats
Pleats are in this season and they are coming in big!  These "knife" pleats cut a powerful swath with ladylike precision.

PASTELS- Specifically Lilac
This pale, powdery hue flatters most skin tones and is EVERYWHERE.  It feels as fresh as sorbet after a heavy meal.

Athleticism
An athletic aesthetic took over the runways, most notably: baseball caps, tennis-inspired dresses and varsity jackets.

Coloring your hair.

By: Amberly Asay

There are certain kinds of people in the world.  There are people who think box color dye is healthy for your hair, the people who think box color is awful, or the people who believe that box color and professional color are pretty much equal on the damage spectrum.

There seems to have been an ongoing debate between box and professional coloring.  Some choose professional color because they don't want to mess up their own hair.  Others choose box color because it's cheaper, and then there are the people who mix the two... (NEVER do this).

Box colors are difficult because they all come with the exact same volume of developer (the stuff that makes your hair change color).  Usually the box has about 12% or greater developer in their mix. However, when a professional stylist dyes hair they use many factors when deciding how much developer to use.  For example, dirty blonde hair that is being dyed to a buttery blonde would not need as much developer as a medium shade brunette would.  Another fun fact, less developer=healthier hair.

Box color can really damage your hair cuticles. Box color leads to unwanted hair.  The amount of ammonia in the mix causes the ends of your hair to shrivel up.  Switching between box color and professional color is especially bad.  Because box color is so different, it is very difficult for professionals to predict what is going to happen to your hair when they try to use professional dye on top of your box color dye.  You probably don't want your hair turning purple or green after your trip to the salon, so be careful!

The damage the box dye causes to your hair ends creates the need to get your hair cut more often.  You also take the risk of box hair dye turning into a nightmare which would warrant an emergency trip to the salon to correct your color.  Not only is box color worse economically in the long run, it robs you of smooth, healthy hair.

The conclusion you should reach from this post?  Always use professional dye when coloring your hair.

Reindeer Hair

By: Amberly Asay

It's ugly sweater season, but what could be better than accompanying that sweater with a great hair style!  Reindeer hair is easy to do and will have people laughing at it's originality.  I did it sitting at my computer, I didn't even use a mirror once!  That is how simple it is.

Simply put your hair in a bun, place a red pom pom (by sticking it with a bobby pin) in the center of the bun.  Get some pipe cleaners and make some antlers and stick them inside of your bun.

The next thing, make some eyes (I made mine out of paper) and stick them to some bobby pins.  Place the bobby pins in your hair and then you are done!

Layering Necklaces

By: Amberly Asay

Layering necklaces seems to be the latest trend in fashion right now.  What used to be a boho hippie look is now becoming more modern.  There are a few steps you must follow though, because if it isn't done right it just looks clunky and bulky.

The first step is to make sure your necklaces are of varying length.  I like using an 18 inch chain with a pendant as my first necklace.  You want your layering to look delicate, effortless and pretty.  Matching the tones in your jewelry to your own skin, hair or eye color is another way to get it right.  And I feel like this is obvious but make sure your jewelry is matching your clothing.  To check out some great examples, visit our Pinterest board: http://pinterest.com/studio1030/layered-necklaces/
