Maleficent Make-Up

Maleficent was released on May 30, 2014.  This movie has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year.  The film teaches us how "Evil has a beginning."  Maleficent was not always the Mistress of All Evil, she started out as a fairy.  This movie will show the transformation.  The synopsis from IMDB, "The untold story of the villain from 'Sleeping Beauty' reveals the events that hardened Maleficent's heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora, only to later realize that the child may hold the key to peace in the land."

BEFORE

AFTER

Doing some research on the film we wanted to do two different eyes.  The fairy Maleficent and Maleficent as the Mistress of All Evil.  The fairy Maleficent is a very natural look, she has long hair, and wears brown dresses.  We used a lot of bronze, browns and gold for the eye shadow. We used a light brown eye brown pencil to slightly thicken the brown.  We did a light liner on the bottom of the eye and worked to create extra long lashes.

For the "Mistress of All Evil" we had a lot of fun and we were really excited to do this eye.  The original Maleficent in the cartoon version of Sleeping Beauty (1959) uses a lot of black and purples.  We decided to use many different shades of purple, gold and blacks to create this fantastic look.

We used black brow pencil to darken the brow and give it a harsher look.  It is more defined and really shows a contrast from the purples.

The make-up line we carry, gloProfessional is used by Reese Witherspoon, Heidi Klum and many other professionals. All gloProfessional products are made up of pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, natural high-pigment minerals, nourishing vitamins and powerful antioxidants which give your skin a healthy, beautiful glowCome in today and get your base matched for free!

Getting the eyeliner right was another challenge.  Doing a long cat-eye with an inside point as well is difficult but it makes your eyes look fantastic.  We used gloProfessional eyeliner pencil to make the lines. It is easy to draw with and makes everything still look defined and gorgeous.

Sleeping Beauty Make-Up

Maleficent is being released on May 30, 2014.  This movie has been one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Maleficent is the untold story of the villain from 'Sleeping Beauty'.  We decided to do our own take on Sleeping Beauty since she will be in this movie as well.  We based most of our colors from the 1959 Disney Version of Sleeping Beauty.

We were trying to decide if we should do pink or blue eyeshadow. Through our research we found that the running gag in the movie, where two of the fairies argue about what color Princess Aurora's dress should be (pink or blue), comes from the filmmaker's problem as to what color Aurora's dress should be (pink or blue). We decided on pink (obviously).

We used gloProfessional eyeshadow and wanted to play with soft and bright pinks.  We started lighter on the inside and got darker as we went out.  We did a thick eyeliner on the top of her lid, to give her that more open and awake look.

Missionary Makeover-Woman

Meet Erika Ence.  Erika is one of our participants in our free missionary to student make-over.  Erika Ence is a BYU student studying Elementary Education. She is a recently returned missionary from the Poland, Warsaw Mission.

As you can see Erika has beautiful long blonde hair.  She didn't want us doing too many things different, which we were okay with.  It is important for all women to get their hair cut every 6-8 weeks even if you are wanting to grow out your hair.  When you are growing out your hair you need to keep your hair trimmed and healthy so it does not break off and appear to be scraggly.  We gave Erika some nice texturizing and soft layers in her hair to make it look more full.  We gave her a nice trim, layered it and styled it with some soft curls.

The next thing we did for Erika was her make-up, using glo-Professional products.  We used base to get a nice foundation for her skin.  We shaped Erika's eyebrows but did not dye them like we dyed Joseph's.  We used an eyebrow pencil and, very lightly, colored them in.  On her cheeks we used a really nice blush that made her cheekbones pop and gave her that rosy glow.  For her eyes, we used eyeliner to increase definition, and then we used a brown shimmer on her eyelids.  We wanted to stick to soft browns because they made her beautiful blue eyes pop!

As you can see, a hair cut, hair product and make-up can make a notable transformation.  We were grateful that Erika took this opportunity and that we were able to work with her to positively enhance her appearance.  If you'd like to see what we can do to improve your style, you can make an appointment with Studio 1030 by visiting our website or calling 801-422-1030.

Disney Inspired Make-up

The new Disney movie Frozen, has generated a lot of fun inspired make-up, clothing and hairstyles. We decided that we would do a modern take on some of our favorite Disney princesses and started with the royalty from Frozen.  The make-up line we carry, gloProfessional is used by Reese Witherspoon, Heidi Klum and many other professionals.

Princess Anna was the first one we did.  The use of the blue, purple and gold was a really fun challenge, and it looked beautiful. We used a navy blue eyeliner and then used gloProfessional eyeshadow over the blue to enhance the bright blue.

Queen Elsa's makeup was a little bit more challenging for us, but again a lot of fun.  We used the same navy eyeliner as on Princess Anna's make-up, but we used white powder and blue powder over it instead.  For Queen Elsa we played with the blues, white and purple powders to give it that frozen, "frosty" look.

Cat-Eye

By: Amberly Asay

The Cat-Eye look was made popular by pop stars like Katy Perry, but this look is one that opens and shows off your gorgeous looking eyes.  There are a few steps that you need to take in order to make the perfect cat-eye.

1.  Choose your eyeliner
Most people use a liquid liner, if you are just starting to use liquid liner, we would suggest: Covergirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner.

2. Figure out your shape
Figure out the shape of your eye and where you want to stop drawing the liner.  This can take a while, and it may take longer to make it even. But that is where Q-tips come in handy.  Keep them nearby, and use them to help shape your perfect eye line.

3. Drawing the line
Gently drag the liner across the line, making it slightly thicker as you go.  Keep drawing until you get to the end of your lashes.  The last and most important step is to make it even.

4. Exaggerate with lashes
You can put on false lashes if you want, or you can just use normal mascara.  When applying mascara, stroke the brush toward your nose. This elongates your lashes and makes your eyes look more open.

5. Keep other makeup subtle
The general rule to makeup still applies, you should only play up one part of your makeup.  If you are going to play up the lips (like a red lip) then you need to keep all of your other makeup natural looking.  If you are going to keep the eyes big, do a more subtle lip.

Mascara

Most women's mascara tubes dry out before they are able to use all of the mascara.  Not only is this obnoxious, but also money wasted.  A simple trick is to add 4-5 drops of saline solution, stir the wand around and then you have more of your mascara.

Intensify your eyes

Logan, a master esthetician at Studio 1030, says when applying makeup to use a glō minerals lip primer.  Not only does it hold your eye makeup in place for up to 12 hours, it intensifies your shadow colors.  Line the inner part of your lower eyelids with a peach or pink toned eyeliner.  It will make your eyes look bigger and brighter (great after an all-night study session).

Number One Rule in Makeup

There are a lot of rules to follow when getting ready for the day.  However, during the holidays many of these rules are forgotten or broken.

A red lip is everyone's holiday favorite, however you must never play up both the mouth and the eyes.  If you do a red lip use a very neutral and soft eye.  When you use a smokey eye, always use a nude lip.

Tips for a red lip:
Pick the right shade for your skintone.
If you use a lip liner, use one that is close to your natural lip color, chances are you will not find a red lip liner that will match the shade of red in your lipstick.
Again only use light eye makeup with your red lipstick.

Here are some tips on your smokey eye:
The number one rule is blending! You need to pair light base colors with rich dark colors. Nice mixes include: Soft gold base with deep purple on top, champagne base with bright blue and peach base with green hue.  Use an eye liner pencil, because the pencil is the easiest to blend.  Use a cream as your main shade on your eye lid and then use a dark eyeshadow color.  Use an eye shadow brush to blend in color starting at your lash line, blending up. Make sure to blend color into the lash line so the eye liner disappears.

Colored Eyeliner

To really brighten and whiten your eyes we suggest switching up your normal eye liner form a black and brown liner to a hue of eggplant or blue.  Mally Roncal, a celebrity makeup artist, first shared this tip.

"Either tone really brightens the whites of the eyes, which tend to yellow as we age," said Mally Roncal.

Make sure the tones are not too bright and that they go with your skin tone of course, but it is fun to mix gold and gray eye shadow with these shades as well.
