5 Hair Tips

1. To keep your hair color vibrant longer, use shampoos and conditioners that are formulated for colored hair.

2. Carrots are good for your hair!  Carrots are full of Vitamin A. This keeps your hair shiny, well conditioned and resilient.  So eat up.

3. Get a trim every 6-8 weeks to ensure that you have no damaged ends and to make your hair look healthy.

4. Brush your hair from roots to end nightly. It distributes natural oils throughout the shaft and gives hair a healthy sheen.

5.  Satin pillow cases help control frizz.  The fabric helps lock in moisture.  Cotton causes hair to dry out so the friction of tossing and turning during  the night creates tangles and split ends.

Missionary Makeover-Woman

Meet Erika Ence.  Erika is one of our participants in our free missionary to student make-over.  Erika Ence is a BYU student studying Elementary Education. She is a recently returned missionary from the Poland, Warsaw Mission.

As you can see Erika has beautiful long blonde hair.  She didn't want us doing too many things different, which we were okay with.  It is important for all women to get their hair cut every 6-8 weeks even if you are wanting to grow out your hair.  When you are growing out your hair you need to keep your hair trimmed and healthy so it does not break off and appear to be scraggly.  We gave Erika some nice texturizing and soft layers in her hair to make it look more full.  We gave her a nice trim, layered it and styled it with some soft curls.

The next thing we did for Erika was her make-up, using glo-Professional products.  We used base to get a nice foundation for her skin.  We shaped Erika's eyebrows but did not dye them like we dyed Joseph's.  We used an eyebrow pencil and, very lightly, colored them in.  On her cheeks we used a really nice blush that made her cheekbones pop and gave her that rosy glow.  For her eyes, we used eyeliner to increase definition, and then we used a brown shimmer on her eyelids.  We wanted to stick to soft browns because they made her beautiful blue eyes pop!

The make-up line we carry, gloProfessional is used by Reese Witherspoon, Heidi Klum and many other professionals. All gloProfessional products are made up of pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, natural high-pigment minerals, nourishing vitamins and powerful antioxidants which give your skin a healthy, beautiful glowCome in today and get your base matched for free!

As you can see, a hair cut, hair product and make-up can make a notable transformation.  We were grateful that Erika took this opportunity and that we were able to work with her to positively enhance her appearance.  If you'd like to see what we can do to improve your style, you can make an appointment with Studio 1030 by visiting our website or calling 801-422-1030.

Missionary Makeover- Man

Meet Joseph Decker.  Joseph is one of our participants in our free missionary to student make-over.  Joseph Decker is a BYU student studying music performance. He is a recently returned missionary from the Oklahoma, Tulsa Mission.

The first thing we did with Joseph was cut his hair. It is important for men to get their hair cut every 4-6 weeks. After this period, hair generally starts to lose its support and is just not cooperating anymore.

Having defined eyebrows is incredibly important for women and men.  Men can get their eyebrows waxed, trimmed and defined just like women.  It is only $8 to get your eyebrows waxed at Studio 1030.  Having your brows professionally done can completely change your whole look. We decided to darken Joseph's eyebrows so they were more defined and noticeable, framing his face.  Below is a picture of Joseph with the professional dye on his eyebrows.

You now have the perfect hairstyle, but it won't go very far if you don't take care of your hair.  Proper hair maintenance for men goes beyond slapping on some shampoo and running a comb through your hair (or just walking out the door); It involves using the right products, regular haircuts and taking care of your scalp.  We used American Crew product on Joseph's hair.  American Crew is a company dedicated to making men's products and supplies. We used forming cream on Joseph's hair.  You work a small amount evenly through damp or dry hair and style as you like it.  Forming cream shampoos out easily without residue, gives you a moveable hold, conditions and moisturizes hair, gives body and fullness to your hair, and softens the hair shaft making it appear thicker.

As you can see, a hair cut, hair product and eyebrow color can make a notable transformation.  We were grateful that Joseph took this opportunity and that we were able to work with him to positively enhance his appearance.  If you'd like to see what we can do to improve your style, you can make an appointment with Studio 1030 by visiting our website or calling 801-422-1030.

Coloring your hair.

By: Amberly Asay

There are certain kinds of people in the world.  There are people who think box color dye is healthy for your hair, the people who think box color is awful, or the people who believe that box color and professional color are pretty much equal on the damage spectrum.

There seems to have been an ongoing debate between box and professional coloring.  Some choose professional color because they don't want to mess up their own hair.  Others choose box color because it's cheaper, and then there are the people who mix the two... (NEVER do this).

Box colors are difficult because they all come with the exact same volume of developer (the stuff that makes your hair change color).  Usually the box has about 12% or greater developer in their mix. However, when a professional stylist dyes hair they use many factors when deciding how much developer to use.  For example, dirty blonde hair that is being dyed to a buttery blonde would not need as much developer as a medium shade brunette would.  Another fun fact, less developer=healthier hair.

Box color can really damage your hair cuticles. Box color leads to unwanted hair.  The amount of ammonia in the mix causes the ends of your hair to shrivel up.  Switching between box color and professional color is especially bad.  Because box color is so different, it is very difficult for professionals to predict what is going to happen to your hair when they try to use professional dye on top of your box color dye.  You probably don't want your hair turning purple or green after your trip to the salon, so be careful!

The damage the box dye causes to your hair ends creates the need to get your hair cut more often.  You also take the risk of box hair dye turning into a nightmare which would warrant an emergency trip to the salon to correct your color.  Not only is box color worse economically in the long run, it robs you of smooth, healthy hair.

The conclusion you should reach from this post?  Always use professional dye when coloring your hair.

Heat Protectant

Hannah Trimble, a barber at Studio 1030 shares some beauty tips.  It does not take very long for us to recognize the damage heat can do to our hair.  Trimble said to use a heat protectant in your hair to use as a barrier between your hair and the 350 degree heat emitted by your hair styling tools. One of her favorite products to use for this purpose is the All Soft Argan-6 Oil by Redken.

All Soft Argan-6 Oil by Redken, is one of the most popular products at Studio 1030.  It nourishes and protects wet or dry hair.  Put it in your hair when it's wet, before you blow dry, and it will help maintain moisture.  Use it before styling to help smooth your hair.  All Soft Argan-6 Oil also blocks humidity to help keep your hair in place.  The price of Argan-6 Oil is a little bit more expensive than other products but entirely worth it.  You can purchase it at Studio 1030 for $31.90.

Tips for Conditioning your Hair

Hannah Trimble, a barber at Studio 1030 has a tip for us.  Hannah says that when you are conditioning your hair, make sure to squeeze out the extra water from the ends of your hair before conditioning.  This will make room for the conditioner to soak in.

Conditioning Your Hair

Caroline Quinn, a stylist at Studio 1030, shared some of her beauty tips for your hair.   She recommends that while conditioning your hair, you put conditioner in the ponytail part of your hair, not on the scalp.  Conditioner on the scalp builds up and creates a limp look.  Be sure to buy the type of conditioner that matches your hair type so your hair gets exactly what it needs for optimum health.

Shampoo & Conditioner

By: Amberly Asay

Brittany Robbins, a stylist at Studio 1030, shares with us some of her beauty tips.  Brittany said to make sure you use a shampoo and a conditioner.  Never use the kind that is combined.  Due to the quality and effectiveness of professional hair products, it is not only more cost effective (professional products require only a little usage to do the job) but increases the overall quality and health of your hair.

Wide Tooth Comb

Brittany Robbins, a stylist at Studio 1030, has shared with us some of her beauty tips.  Robbins said that you shouldn't brush your hair when it's wet.

Your hair stretches 40-50% when it's wet.  If your stretches too much it will snap the hair.  Make sure to use a wide tooth comb when brushing out your hair.
